School-age children and youth are hurting after this pandemic. Deficits in data about their mental health made it even more difficult to respond quickly to their needs during the health crisis that kept them home, dealing with the loss of loved ones, and the pressures of remote learning. WCA's research that started well before the COVID-19 pandemic revealed this as well as the trend that 50% of all lifetime mental health disorders begin by age 14.

Dear Legislator,

Due to this pandemic, the mental well-being of children and youth is strained like never before. School-age children have faced unprecedented stress due to isolation, remote learning, and losing loved ones that can lead to depression, academic loss, identity-related trauma, and more. Before the pandemic, it was difficult to assess the mental health of our children and get data to show the best way to alleviate barriers to support. Now, it is even harder to find enough providers to meet the rising demand, have culturally-competent options for care, and sufficient services for children with and without health insurance.

I am writing to ask you to support the 2022 Budget Agenda of Campaign For Kids (CFK) under the leadership of Westchester Children’s Association (WCA) and to add $100,000 new funding to offer children mental health support in trusted afterschool environments in 2022. CFK is the voice of youth services in Westchester County and we need to meet children where they are.
